How to Market Yourself: 5 Things You Should Start Doing Now

Whether you’re a solopreneur like me, or an employee climbing the corporate later, knowing how to market yourself is a must.

More often than not, a good marketing strategy will be the only thing that separates you from your competition.

But what do you need to do to market yourself correctly? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

Pick A Niche

Whether or not you should pick a niche is somewhat of a hot debate in the market world? I personally think there’s lots of benefits to narrowing your focus.

Sure, we’ve all heard the old saying, “don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” but when it comes to how to market yourself, having a lot of eggs in one basket isn’t a bad thing.

Trust me, I learned this the hard way. When I first started my solopreneur journey, I was doing the most. Literally. I wanted to do everything and reach everybody. Huge mistake.

Just to be clear, what I’m about to say isn’t meant to discourage you from coming up with ideas or trying new things, but picking a niche is so important.

If your marketing message tries to speak to everyone, the sad reality is that it’ll probably end up having the opposite effect. Your message should be as clear and specific as possible, otherwise it can lead to a lot of confusion.

Whether you’re trying to sell something or position yourself for a new job, the first thing you need to do is find the people who want what you have to offer.

In my opinion, picking a niche doesn’t mean that you have to pigeonhole yourself, it just means that you need to understand that your pitch shouldn’t be that you can do everything.

In some instances, there’s an appeal to being a Jack of all trades, but when people really want (or need) something done, they look for an expert.

Find Your Community

Connecting with other people your industry is essential to your success. Sometimes the things you learn from the people around you can be more beneficial than any course or program.

One of the easiest ways to find and join a community is to be active on social media. Facebook groups can be a great way to connect with like-minded people. LinkedIn is ideal for those looking for more straightforward networking opportunities. Overall, though, your specific field will determine which platform is best for your needs.

Although most of spend a good chunk of our time online, it’s important that we don’t forget to connect with people in real life as well.

Attending industry specific workshops, networking events, conferences can be a great way to get yourself in front of the right people.

If you can’t find the community you’re looking for, build it yourself.

Create (And Share) Content

People aren’t exaggerating when they say content is king. The Internet as we know it literally wouldn’t exist without content. So if you’re looking for a way to share your thoughts, ideas, and expertise; content is the answer.

Creating your own content can establish you as an industry expert. Writing blogs, taking photos, and creating videos are great ways to let people know who you are and what you’re good at.

The key to creating high-quality content is to have a strong understanding of what people need/want to know and delivering that information. Take some time to get to know your target audience.

Even if you don’t have anything to sell, it may be helpful to create personas for your ideal audience.

  • What type of people do you want to attract?
  • How old are they?
  • Where are they located?
  • What are they interested in?

Having a strong understanding of who you should be marketing yourself (and your content to) will be very important in making sure your information reaches the right people.

If you’re not ready to start creating your own content, sharing other people’s content can also be a great way to connect and engage with others. Tools like Shareize even allow you to add your own CTA to the content you share which opens up a new avenue to generate leads.

Build A Portfolio

No matter what you do, it’s always a good idea to have a portfolio to showcase your work.

Depending on your field, what you include in your portfolio will vary. However, portfolios typically include things like:

  • References
  • Social Media Links (if appropriate)

Creating a website is popular option for displaying your portfolio, but if you do decide to go this route it’s important to consider the costs of purchasing a domain and hosting your website.

A personalized landing page can also be a great option. This type of page will allow you to display all of your important files and documents in one place and won’t require any web design skills.

Be Yourself

This may seem like a no brainer, but there are a lot of people out there who don’t do this – and it shows.

I know it’s tempting to emulate people who have already made it where you want to go, but authenticity is what will set you apart from other people in your industry.

Trust is one of the most important aspects of any marketing strategy. Think of your favorite brands. What makes you choose them over their competition? There’s a good chance it’s because a sense of trust has been established.

Marketing yourself is no different. You want the people to feel confident in what you say and do.
